About Us

The Australian Marine Social Sciences Network aims to grow a network of social science practitioners, researchers and students working on human dimensions of Australia’s coasts, estuaries and oceans.

Marine social sciences study the human dimensions of coasts and marine environments: how people relate to the ocean and to each other around ocean use and management, drawing on disciplines like sociology, economics, and anthropology. Social sciences are important because they show us how different groups depend on and interact with the ocean, enabling Australians to make better decisions that reflect everyone's interests, from Indigenous communities to business and industries and to people who love the coast. The MarSocSciAus network provides a platform for those who are working in human dimensions of marine environments to connect, collaborate on research and generate knowledge together with other network members.

Membership is open to all researchers, students and professionals interested in social sciences, humanities and the marine environment. The network is informal and member-driven, with a small convening group supporting network activities.
We are part of a global network working to bring together a growing community and facilitate knowledge exchange between diverse stakeholders from across the marine and coastal sector.
